What is ‘Green Costuming’ and why does it matter?

The textile industry as a whole is a tremendous source of harm to our planet. The growing impact of fast fashion has caused a major increase in the amount of water used in the production of cottons, and the popularity of synthetic fabrics has been a massive contributor to greenhouse gasses. The art of costuming, especially in shows with a modern-day setting, calls for a lot of temporarily used clothing even beyond the speed of fast fashion.

This means thrifting and renting costumes first. Joining and co-founding The Costume Collective to make resources and renting accessible. Dry cleaning with companies which pledge to use environmentally friendly methods. And most of all, thrifting, recycling, and reusing day-to-day materials whenever possible.
